Perry is born July 25, 1968 in Chicago in Illinois. She was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry stated she felt timid to perform in high school but began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness led Perry back to California, where theater jobs were in demand. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017 she had a recurring role on the ABC Political thriller Scandal which starred her father. She was also cast in The CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The role was selected via auditions the fact that she had a deep association with it.
